For high school English, we have been working on refining the proper use of grammar, punctuation, and the elements of composition. In order to make sure that my daughter is thoroughly proof-reading her work before she turns it in, I came up with this Self-Editing Checklist. Along with the checklist, we make heavy use of Writers, Inc. as a reference for checking writing and I highly recommend it as a concise and easy to reference guide for writers.
With the checklist, students can look for specific errors in their work and use Writers, Inc. (or the writing guide of your choice) to look up the proper use of the element in question. The checklist includes both mechanical and organizational items in addition to items checking source citations.
