Grades Used: Level 1
I started using the Level 1 of Writing with Ease with both my first grader and my fourth grader. My fourth grader has Asperger's along with acute sensory issues. Writing has been something of an issue for him for as long as I can remember. He never even liked to color with crayons or markers.
I eased him into this curriculum slowly and took each lesson one day at a time. At first he wouldn't do any of the writing himself. He dictated and I wrote. Then I urged him to write, at the very least, the short copy sentences. Now, he chooses to write the longer sentences and writes his own response to "What is one thing you remember about the story?". The difference in his desire to write is really amazing. While he might not choose to write by hand as a hobby, he doesn't shut down over it any more either.
I can see a difference in my first grader, too. She still writes the short sentences, but when she answers the questions, she answers in complete sentences now without having to be corrected. She is definitely paying better attention to the details of a story and able to pick out the key elements without much repetition.
Overall, I think Writing with Ease delivers and recommend it highly.

My child loves the book selections and always wants to go to the library to read the whole book, story, or poem. It really gets him excited about reading good books. This is our first year using this curriculum and it is going extremely well. I wish I has used Writing With Ease 1 and 2. I will definitely purchase 1 next year for my next child.
Cons: Narration can be frustrating for the child at first
Grades Used: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
We have been using Writing With Ease for a few years now. Overall, I love this program. The literature selections are fun and often my children's interest will be piqued and they will want to get the book from the library to read at home.
Writing With Ease 1 and 2 are a nice, gentle introduction to narration and summarization. Line spacing is appropriate for the beginning writer and the parent or teacher takes dictation for the narration assignments. The steps to learning how to listen for key story elements and convey these in a concise manner are clear and build slowly throughout the year.
Writing With Ease 3 adds more challenges for the older child. The line spacing is smaller and the child is responsible for writing more on their own.
For the older child, not familiar with this program.. the narration piece can be frustrating and challenging. I encourage parents or teachers to think about the child's ability when choosing a level, as the book levels (1, 2, 3 etc) do not correspond to grade levels.. A child can move quickly through the easier levels as they build their skills and then take on the more challenging levels without as much frustration.
