Writing Strands is a full language arts program includes writing, reading, and speaking but only focuses on grammar on a “need to know” basis. The introductory level of the course focuses on basic, organizational, descriptive, and creative writing, while the higher levels concentrate on preparing students for high school and college level writing. The courses start at pre-school and go all the way through the 12 grade. The curriculum consists of a book for each level, and a parents’ guide each for reading, communicating and evaluating writing.

Cons: too narrow subject assignments
Grades Used: 3-8
I have used this with 3 of my children, with my oldest daughter it was okay she just did the assignments with no fuss or enthusiasm, with my oldest son it worked very well because he needed and liked the structure and direction of not having to choose his topic. He finished 6 of the books My next oldest daughter hated it because it was too structured and she wanted to choose her topic. We only got through the first two assignments. So if you have a reluctant writer who likes to know what the assignment is and get it done this will fit, if you have a budding author maybe not so good.
Cons: some assignments are very short
Grades Used: 3-4
2 boys who don't like to write have used this book successfully and without complaint. They liked that they could do it by themselves, and so did I!
Cons: none
Grades Used: 4
I personally love this series. My grandson did not, but he does not enjoy writing. This is the only reason we stopped using these books. These books have a ton of info.
Grades Used: 3rd Level
My oldest used this for the first time last year in 6th grade. I really didn't stress writing assignments in school but knew that she was going to need to start.
She was able to take the book and complete it on her own with only my assistance when editing and correcting. She really enjoyed the organization it taught to start writing and she developed her writing skills.
