Spell to Write and Read is a language arts, spelling, and grammar program inspired by The Writing Road to Reading. Spell to Write and Read works from some of the same outstanding sources that Romalda Spalding used in The Writing Road to Reading. Both systems draw from the 70 Phonograms (the sound-letter system to the English language organized by Anna Gillingham), the Extended Ayres List (a scientifically normed core list of spelling words), the method of spelling dictation demonstrated by Dr. Samuel Orton, and a general core list of spelling rules collected from different writers in the previous century. Wanda Sanseri has updated these basic tools based on modern computer research. She has organized the teacher materials in a user-friendly format and rewritten the spelling rules to make them more precise, lyrical, and complete. She has expanded the instruction to create a fuller and integrated language arts program.

Cons: heavy prep, hard to start
Grades Used: 1-8
I have not found a better program. I'm sold!!! It took me 1yr to finally get the nerve to start it-had to take extra class-but, well worth it!!!!Once I actually got started everything flows and lot of support. Love all the extra supplements as helps. watched videos on youtube-and bought dvd's very helpful. I feel like I'm really teaching the kids-It's a lot of work but, it's worth every effort- It's the one program I'm so glad I invested in !!!!
Cons: First time users MUST take the time to read and learn SWR method. Not a quick pick up and run.
This is my first year learning/using SWR and I don't feel that I took enough time to get comfortable myself with the system before jumping in with the kids. Now that we are up and running, I love how it works and am excited as I see how my kids are progressing.
Oh my this is my best purchase for this school year. I am a 1st time user to SWR. It is a different approach to learning so I myself am learning along with my boys. I also have a daughter in 6th grade and am going over the spelling rules and some sounds with her. I wish I had been able to attend the training before using this material (as it is a different approach). We are 3 months into it and my boys are reading simple words. My oldest has some learning difficulties and my youngest in from Ethiopia (only speaking English for a year). I am able to teach both boys at the same time.
Cons: takes a minute to start up
Grades Used: 2nd
Very good program for hows and whys of language. Also good for reading/spelling/writing all in one program. This also spans all grade levels, so a very good value.
