My children really liked these books (we used just the first couple in the series) And they really enjoyed the fact that when we went to a museum, they could tell the docents that they still used these for their lessons. :O)
This one's hard for me to rate because I have both this edition and the earlier edition. They are NOT the same! They do NOT have the same value either, in my opinion.
Honestly, I would rate this edition as 2 stars and the original McGuffey Readers as 5 stars.
So, here goes nothin'...
This edition is dumbed down from the earlier edition. It does not go into the classic literature nearly as much or as early as the earlier edition.
This edition clearly shows the beginnings of removing God and Christian values from the schools. Scriptures have been eliminated (which may also be part of the dumbing down) and there is no longer (in this edition) the teaching of moral values on the level that is present in the first edition.
On my shelf, this edition is collecting dust while we've worn out 3 sets of the first edition.

Lovely old illustrations combined with solid, old-fashioned values make so many of the stories in these readers priceless. Sometimes we will even read them to our younger ones. A timeless and valuable addition to any bookshelf. Truly, they "don't make them like this anymore"!!!

These readers finally gave my daughter the push she needed to start reading! They build on themselves, so she learned the words and then knew them the next time she saw them and the stories are short enough she didn't get discouraged.
