Cons: none
This book is a great outline of what your student should be learning each year. There are tons of ideas in this book. Love this!!
Cons: a bit dry, many unnecessary subject topics
I used this book throughout the elementary years of my childrens' education. It is a great resource for putting your own curriculum together. There are many resources provided & suggested. Also, it provides a comprehensive look at the acquired knowledge suggested for each grade level. We didn't fully explore some of the subject topics presented, but used this resource as a supplement in those areas.
If you want to put together your own curriculum this book would be a tremendous help. We use a somewhat eclectic approach and currently I'm using this book just for ideas (we can get many of the books she mentions in our library!). I'm not too concerned about "covering the bases for grade X" but if that is one of your concerns this book should help you get a feel for what one person thinks is a good curriculum coverage for said grade. She has *lots* of specific resources mentioned - books you can get from library, textbooks, websites, catalogs, vendors.
I love the way Rudd literally takes you year by year in what is expected in an average home schooler; yet reminds the eager parent that "children vary" and you should move forward or back as needed.
She lists what things a child should learn for each grade (from pre-k through high school) and then follows it up with a variety of resources to aid you in teaching. What I particularly like about the book is that she sets realistic goals for each grade while still setting the bar higher than most public school requirements.
