I've used Cuisenaire Rods for 15 years and 6 children. Preschoolers like to play with them while older siblings are doing school. You can make pictures with them, like pattern blocks, build houses or farms, stack and sort. They are great for visualizing math concepts. Use a rod track for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Build stacks and practice fractions. I bought a large "multiple child" wooden set so many years ago and it was totally worth the cost!

Have used these with all three children. They love them and have put together some complex ideas with them.
There are a variety of idea books and learning cards available to use these rods with as learning tools. Some even include the alphabet.
Excellent fun learning tool.
I have been using Cuisenaire Rods to help my children learn math for a whole lotta years! My last child in now nearly finished with high school and all of the kids have enjoyed working with these great little rods. They really help make concepts much more tangible and understandable. Learning to balance equations with the scale is a great help for older ones while the younger ones obviously enjoy learning to count and manipulate numbers by manipulating the rods.
Wonderful tool!
