The Barefoot Fisherman
The Barefoot Fisherman by Paul Amdahl
The Barefoot Fisherman is an enjoyable read for neophyte and veteran fisherman alike. Paul Amdahl has written a book that is an easily understood "how to" guide for the beginner, but even the saltiest sea captain would enjoy relaxing with this book. For the veteran angler, the book brings those childhood memories flooding back as he recalls what it is that he so loves about fishing.
Although enjoyable by those of any age, The Barefoot Fisherman is geared to the young, inexperienced angler. Amdahl gives a basic nuts and bolts approach of how to target different species of fish, as well as an easy to understand explanation of the different types of rods, reels, line, and tackle. Sunfish, bass, catfish, walleye, and trout each have a chapter devoted to the best methods for catching these species. Amdahl also includes a chapter on fishing at the ocean as well as one entitled "Other Fish" that gives a cursory overview of some lesser sought after species such as carp and sturgeon. Most young anglers will find Chapter 6 most helpful; it discusses bait fishing. There is even a chapter on tying flies for those interested in fly fishing.
Paul Amdahl has written a book that is in essence a children's fishing guide. Although I have been fishing for 30 years, reading The Barefoot Fisherman made me want to get some crickets and a bobber and catch a bucket full of bluegills. Throughout The Barefoot Fisherman the author's enthusiasm for the great outdoors is contagious. Fishing is so much more than just landing a fish. It is the thrill of the pursuit. It is watching a sunrise over a mountain lake. It is the sound of the crashing waves on the beach with the seagulls crying overhead. It is the still early morning quiet of God's creation. Dads, by teaching some of the fishing techniques found in this book to your children, you will be giving them much more than a fishing lesson. You will be opening a whole new world to them. In addition, you will be creating memories and traditions that will last a lifetime for both of you.
