The Hungry Thing - Activities and web resources developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project, funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP). This supplemental unit provides resources for students in K/1 grades to focus on phonemic awareness related to The Hungry Thing. During these lessons, students explore various phonemic awareness activities and try to find the correct response to each activity. (Y)
How My Parents Learned to Eat (Food) - Students will use the Internet to research cultural differences in foods and manners of eating in Japan and the U.S. They will have an opportunity to learn how rice and potatoes are grown, to learn about some favorite snack foods in Japan, and to study menus from Japanese and American restaurants. The culminating group project will be to design a menu for a Japanese-American restaurant. At the end of this unit, students should have a better grasp of the cultural differences and similarities between Japanese and American ways of eating, and, through this understanding, have a better grasp on who they are and how they fit into the world. Grade 2 (Y)
